Ios is one of my favourite places in the world and the list of reasons why is pretty extensive.. Considering I’ve never been the greatest at using my words, I’m going to show you why I love it so much.
For starters, it’s an island in the Mediterranean surrounded by crystal clear water and unlike Mykonos or Santorini, its still very undeveloped – hello beautiful natural scenery!
Oh and lets not forget it’s much, much cheaper in comparison to both islands. Where I would have to pay 70 euros for a sun-bed at Nammos on Psarou beach, I only had to pay about 6 euros for 2 sun-beds in Ios, including an umbrella (serious bonus points right there #brokestudenttravelling).
Although many may disagree with me, the most magical sunset I saw in Greece was right here in Ios – yep, even better than Santorini. Specifically at Pathos lounge bar, which is a massive open-air bar on a cliff-face overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Being there is just an all-round ‘holy-sh*t-is-this-real-life?!’ experience. At night it gets colourfully lit up, the tropical house music is replaced with groovy beats and the whole venue becomes one big dance floor.
Another reason why I love this place is because it’s quite literally a mini Australia (no, really.. not sure how or why but its extremely popular with the Aussies) and after weeks of travelling around Europe it feels great to get a taste of home. And if you’re looking for an actual taste go to Harmony for brekkie – they serve Mexican style poached eggs with avo and even do acai bowls!
Honestly, when it comes to food the Greeks really do know how to do it. #Tb to the best Hummus of my life (courtesy of Karma Beach Bar).
This post can’t end without a mention of Ios’ crazy night life – don’t expect to be home before sunrise. Start the night at Astra bar during happy hour and then work your way through the town – Alt bar for very funky shots (menu ranges from Harry Potter to BJ shots), hit up Lost Boys for a game of beer pong, Circus for some live music, EscoBar and Pash for a decent boogie, Shushbar for a silent disco, Slammer bar to literally get smashed (shots and a hit to the head with literally anything – fire extinguishers, hammers, skateboards and baseball bats included), and the list goes on..
Whatever the case, know that you’re probably gonna end the night (or start the morning) on some random stairs in the square with a gyros in hand.
If you’re looking to explore a new island in Greece and meet young people who want to party then Ios is definitely worth checking out. Let me know if I’ve missed any cool spots worth going to!
